My fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Watanabe, had us perform Merchant of Venice. I don't know how 11-year-old Marsha understood "The quality of mercy is not strain'd; it dropeth as the gentle rain..." I'm not sure why they didn't start us out with "A Midsummer Night's Dream" or "Romeo and Juliet". But I am not sorry that I can still recite Portia's speech, and I wish I had memorized the sonnets!
Lovely story. My mother loved Shakespeare, and so I grew up loving his work as well.
